Reef-Safe Sunscreens Good for You and the Environment

Reef-Safe Sunscreens Good for You and the Environment

On January 1, 2021 Hawai‘i became the first state in the country to ban the sale and distribution of sunscreens formulated with oxybenzone and octinoxate–two of the most detrimental chemicals that harm our reefs and even our bodies!

Although this law went into effect this past month, you may still have chemical sunscreens lying around the house or stashed in your beach bag.  We want to make it easy for you to safely ditch those chemical sunscreens and make the switch to our reef-safe mineral-based sunscreens with our new Trade, Don’t Trash program!  If your sunscreen lists oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, and/or nanoparticles as active ingredients, you should in fact toss them. Even if you don’t swim in the ocean, these ingredients may wash off in the shower or pass through the sewage systems (via our urine), and could eventually end up in the sea!

Disclaimer: Many commercial sunscreens claim to be “reef-friendly” or “reef-safe” but are NOT! Be sure to always review the active ingredients to be sure!

Here's how we can help!

Get Naked and Get Clear Skin!

Get Naked and Get Clear Skin!

With restaurants and shops opening back up, we may be putting on more makeup these days! As exciting as it is to wear foundation, mascara and lipstick again, we still want to maintain our glow and in order to do so, the first step in any skincare routine at night is removing our makeup.

Did you know you can clear up your skin simply by removing your makeup properly? Say goodbye to your basic coconut oil (pore-clogging) or commercial makeup removers, and melt away your makeup with our Get Naked Makeup Removing Cleanser.

Get Naked!

Here’s what our clean and organic makeup removing oil can do for your #AOGlow. The best part is that it works for all skin types!

  • Gently melts away stubborn, waterproof makeup without stripping the skin's natural protective barriers
  • Leaves skin soothed, refreshed and balanced.
  • Dissolves impurities and cleanses skin without clogging pores, leaving your skin soft and radiant.

Instructions

How to use it:

  1. Dispense three to five pumps into dry hands, then massage onto the dry face to dissolve makeup and other impurities.
  2. Rinse thoroughly then use our Reusable Bamboo Cotton Pads to remove the remaining makeup.
  3. Spritz your face with our Rose Water Toner or Hibiscus Mist Facial Toner.
  4. Follow with our ‘Ili Alohi Serum and Ili Hydration Moisturizer.

Use with these products!

Wahine Support Group

Wahine Support Group

Is she smiling through the pain? The scars you can't see are the hardest to heal. As you know, I've come forward about my issues with acne, but now I want to open up about something that is more than skin deep...

We are more than an organic skincare brand. We are strong wahine who support other strong wahine, and that is why I, Chelsa wanted to start the Wahine Support Group.

What is the Wahine Support Group?

It is wahine against domestic violence. This was something I had searched for myself.I found there were no resources of support here on the Big Island...no one I could simply talk to about what I was going through.

As a victim of domestic violence, I know what it's like to not have anyone to turn to. To feel isolated from my family and to feel like a prisoner in my own home.

What if I told you we have a Wahine Support Group? A safe place where there is no judgement, a place to figure out what you're going through, a place to just share your emotions, a place of sisterhood that can relate to you without the judgement.

Why a support group?

To form a safe space where women can come together for support, to collect resources and to help women regain the confidence to put an end to the domestic violence.

What is domestic violence?

Often times when people hear domestic violence, they imagine physical abuse. However, domestic violence can be emotional and psychological abuse as well.

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetuated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence and emotional abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence can vary dramatically; however, the one constant component of domestic violence is one partner's consistent efforts to maintain power and control over the other.

Break the silence.

It's an epidemic. Here are some important facts:

- In a single day Hawaiʻi, domestic violence programs served 505 victims.

- 41% of Hawaiʻi domestic violence programs reported being underfunded, understaffed or both.

- 1 in 7 women Hawaiʻi has been raped in her lifetime.

We are a support group. No, we are NOT a hotline, we are the REAL support. Follow us on Instagram at @wahinesupportgroup for updates and more information. Stay tuned for more info! We will be dropping our limited edition reusable pouches soon, and a percentage of the proceeds will benefit a nonprofit fighting domestic violence.

5 False Organic Skincare Myths

5 False Organic Skincare Myths

As we become more aware of the harmful chemicals in our skincare products, Iʻm sure we all have noticed clean and organic skincare trending! Increasingly more and more companies are jumping on the natural skincare train and claiming to be clean beauty brands.

As an organic skincare company, we are excited to see more people taking an interest in their health and becoming more conscious of the products they are using on their skin. Of course, many people are still skeptical about organic products, believing them to simply be marketing gimmicks or doubting that they will work as well as the commercial products they grew up using.

For those of you who are hesitant to go organic, we’re here to falsify some common misconceptions about skincare!

Pictured above: Mauna Kea Tea (we source our matcha green tea powder for our Green Goddess Cleanser from here!)

Here are some of our top sellers to get you started!

What to do about hormonal acne! 😨

What to do about hormonal acne! 😨

As women, we deal with this once a month: OUR PERIOD. It’s a whole four to five days (or more!) where we might be moody, experience cramping and worst yet–break out. We’re here to explain hormonal acne and how we can help you maintain your #AOGlow even during your period–it’s possible!✨

During your time of the month, your hormonal skin generates an excess amount of a certain type of sebum, resulting in clogged pores. The solution? Using a gentle cleanser containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or plant acids derived mostly from citrus fruits. When trying to determine the products that are must-haves in your beauty routine, there are many options that you should consider. A good moisturizer and facial serum are non-negotiable, and so is a toner.

WHAT YOU NEED: 1) good cleanser and 2) toner! Don't worry, we got you covered.

Why our Hibiscus Mist Facial Toner?

  • It's alcohol free AND organic.
  • If you want to even out your skin and get a flawless look, a toner is a must-have for your routine and choosing the right toner for your skin is very important.

Why use an alcohol-free toner?

  • Less irritation; a good toner gets rid of damage on the surface of the skin, plus it's gentle and will allow the surface of your skin to heal. Alcohol-based toners irritate your skin, resulting in redness and inflammation.
  • pH becomes normal; an alcohol-free toner will balance the pH levels of your skin with more ease, reducing irritation.
  • Rejuvenate; an alcohol-free toner will help rejuvenate and energize your skin, giving you a healthier glow and smoother appearing skin. The dryness or appearance of oily skin will be reduced significantly by using a toner on your skin daily.

What is in it and why is it good for you?

Papaya Seed Extract

  • Contains the protein-dissolving, papain enzyme that can be found in many exfoliating products.
  • Helps reduce acne by removing dead skin cells that can clog pores.

Willow Bark Extract

  • Provides gentle exfoliation for more radiant skin.
  • Helps reduce acne and excess oil.
  • Helps reduce signs of aging and the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Refines pores and minimizes pore size.

Cleansing on a regular basis creates brighter and smoother-looking skin. Our gentle foaming cleanser gently removes dead skin, plus cleanses, clarifies, calms, invigorates and brightens your skin. It can also even out skin tone!

Every A.M. and P.M., be sure to follow the steps below and you'll see clearer skin, even during your period!

  1. Cleanse
  2. Tone (also try our Rose Water Toner!)
  3. Apply serum then moisturizer

While we may never be able to avoid the occasional zit here and there during our period, it is possible to get it under control, and we’re here to help! If you have any additional hormonal acne questions, feel free to DM us on Instagram or email us.

10 Common Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making! 😱

10 Common Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making! 😱

Self-care and even more specifically, skincare has really become a focus for many of us during the pandemic as we are motivated to make our health (mental and physical) a priority. However, did you know that you might be making some mistakes during your a.m. or p.m. routine–this is pretty common! But don’t worry, we’re here to help.

TOP 10 Skincare Mistakes:

1. Substituting sunscreen with SPF makeup.

If your makeup has SPF value, consider it an added benefit, not a replacement for the real thing. Dr Leslie Baumann (a dermatologist) says you would need to wear 7x the normal amount of foundation and 14x the normal amount of powder to experience the same effects of applying sunscreen–totally not realistic!

#AOGlow Tip: Apply our Liquid Reef-Safe Sunscreen to your face (and body, course!) anytime your skin is exposed to sunlight.

2. Washing your face too much.

You don’t need to keep washing your face all the time! You’ll see less breakouts when you’re not continuously washing your face. While cleaning your face is important, the oils in your face get removed when it is subject to constant washing, causing the skin to overcompensate and overproduce oils.

#AOGlow Tip: Wash your face with our ʻŌlena + Honey Foaming Cleanser 2x a day.

3. Not moisturizing oily skin.

People with oily skin think they don’t need to apply moisturizer, and that it's only applicable to people with dry skin. Even for people with an oily skin type, skin gets dehydrated from being exposed to the sun or the air-conditioner for too long, constant sweating, or even constant washing!

#AOGlow Tip: Apply our Ili Hydration Moisturizer, in the morning and night.

4. Exfoliating too much or too little.

When skin is scrubbed too hard and too often, you strip it of its natural oil barrier, and it may appear red and raw, plus feel a little too tight. If you’re not exfoliating regularly, you make your skin susceptible to acne and clogged pores. The frequency of exfoliation should depend on your skin type–2x a week for sensitive skin and 4x a week for tough skin.

#AOGlow Tip: Exfoliate your skin with our Green Goddess Cleanser, 3-4x a week.

5. Avoiding your daily coffee.

Are you on a caffeine detox? It actually may be affecting your skin! Quitting cold-turkey is not necessary (you’re probably sighing with relief!). In fact, the antioxidants in coffee may help to fight premature aging which arises from free radicals. Coffee in moderation is still recommended :)

#AOGlow Tip: Can’t get enough coffee? Try our Awakening Eye Espresso in the morning to start your day!

6. Not applying skincare products before going to sleep.

After wearing makeup all day, you might feel like going bare for the night. However, your skin will restore itself better if you apply your products not just in the a.m., but p.m. as well. The active ingredients in the products neutralize the negative effect of cosmetics and refresh your face.

#AOGlow Tip: Apply our Ili Alohi Serum before bed. Cleanse and tone before applying serum, then follow with our moisturizer.

7.Taking extra hot showers.

A hot bath feels amazing after a long day; however, hot water disturbs your skin’s natural balance and strips it of its oily barriers–causing the skin to overproduce oils to make up for the loss. In addition, the harsh chemicals in your soap harms skin as well. Opt for lukewarm water, a fragrance-free soap, plus be sure to moisturize after your shower!

8. Using the same pillow case for two weeks (or more!).

Even if you wash your hair and thoroughly cleanse your face every evening before going to sleep, your pillowcase stores dust, particles of epithelium and hair (yours and/or your pet’s!). After two to three days, your pillow has the perfect conditions to produce blemishes on your face. Major key–changing your pillowcase once every two days. Even try replacing yours with silk pillowcases–they can protect your face from rashes as well as premature wrinkling.

9. Refusing to use makeup removers.

Do you get lazy and wash off your makeup with just one cleanser or even worse, water only. Although you might be saving on time, you’re leaving makeup particles on your face that can cause your pores to clog, and lead to acne or an increase in the skin’s oil content. That’s why using a form of a makeup remover before cleansing is a must!

#AOGlow Tip: Use our Get Naked Makeup Remover before cleansing and toning in the evening.

10. Not using toner.

Toner restores the pH balance of the skin and prepares it for your skincare routine steps. It’s also necessary after harsh procedures like chemical peels. By using a toner, you’ll avoid skin concerns such as dryness, irritation, and rashes!

#AOGlow Tip: Apply our Hibiscus Mist Facial Toner or Rose Water Toner morning and evening.

Were you making any of these mistakes? We hope our tips helped! If you have any skincare questions or concerns, DM us on Instagram or leave a comment below!
