International research teams found the HIGHEST concentrations of oxybenzone around coral reefs popular with tourist, particularly those in Hawaii and the Caribbean.
Oxybenzone alters corals DNA, making the coral more susceptible to potentially fatal bleaching and acts as an endocrine disruptor, causing baby coral to encase itself in its own skeleton and die.
An estimated 25 to 60 million bottles worth of sunscreen chemicals wash off into coral reef each year. And between 6000-14000 tons of sunscreen enters coral reef areas around the world each year. In Hawaii and the Caribbean concentrations were 12 times higher, according to the sea water testing.
